How do you compute the Zmanim in Rav Ovadia Yosef Z”L opinion?

Facebooktwitterlinkedinmail

In CalJ, the Zmanim for Alot haShachar (עלות השחר) and Earliest Tefilin are calculated as follows:

  • Alot haShachar = 72 halachical minutes (seasonal) before the Netz (הנץ החמה)
  • Earliest Tefilin = 6 seasonal minutes after Alot haShachar

The sunrise itself (Netz) is when the Sun is -0,8333 degrees below the horizon (first visible rays).

  1. Sholom Aleichem,

I had been using your app on iPhone for a while now- it’s is becoming better every time! I have a question, how do you calculated earliest time of Shma/Tfilin(not R. Ovadia’s opinion)?

Thank you in advance and Shabbat shalom.

    1. Dear Alex,

Thank you for using my app.

In the opinion of Rav Meir Posen שליט”א, the earliest time for Tefilin is when the Sun is 11 degrees below the horizon line.

  2. It was noted no tachanun yesterday Erev Yom kippur on your calendar, but we did the Tachanun, ou Rebbi said if anything the greatest thing to do that.
And I noticed that tonight same as stated on your calendar I wonder why?
Thank you for this useful ap!

    1. Dear Jacqueline,

As far as I know, there is no Tachanun on the day before Yom Kippur, nor until the end of the month of Tishrei.

      Shana tova !

  3. The hatsot zeman is only according to the GRA, not Rav Ovadya… could that be updated? Thank you!

      1. The GRA takes the minutes between NETZ and SHEKIA, and divides by two. Rav Ovadya (i believe, please do double check) takes the minutes between ALOT and his TZET HA’KOCHAVIM, and divides by two.

        1. Thanks.
Does the zman of Chatzot (of Rav Ovadia) has consequences on the computation of other times reported in the list? or is it an information in itself which you would like to see listed?
