  1. I want to report a bug in Calj. I just entered a Yarzeit in “My Events” that
occurs in Adar. When I checked the date in Calj, it is displaying the date
in Adar ll for next year. The date of death was not in a leap year, so the
Yarzeit is observed in Adar l.
    Calj for iPad v2.1.7

    1. Dear Barbara,

There are two opinions. The Ashkenazim retain Adar 1, and the Sefaradim observe the hazcara in Adar 2.

To be complete, the App should give you the option to choose.
I will hopefully add the feature in a future release אי׳ה

For the time being you can force the app to use Adar l by entering the date for 5774 (or any other leap year) instead of the year of death.

      Thanks

  2. iPhone 6+; IOS 9.3.1; CalJ version 3.6.2, All settings refer NY, USA

Thank you for great and useful job.
    Unfortunately, there is a bug.
I exported events to my Google calendar.. Unfortunately the reminder (for Sukkot) came at common, not Jewish time, that is at night, but not by sunset.
Please fix, otherwise the feature does not make sense, as the reminder comes later when the event had occured already.

    1. Dear Henry,
Thank you for your message, and for using my app.
I would not define as bug the behaviour that you describe, because it actually works as I expected to — but I understand what you mean.

The Calendar events are basically supposed to be a quick way to consult your calendar ahead of time in order to avoid fixing a meeting (or a vacation etc.) at an inappropriate date. They are not really meant to fire Zman-related reminders (such as candle times etc.).
The feature that will help you better, in this particular matter, is for me to extend the current “Rosh Chodesh / Shabbat / Yahrzeit Reminders” (the iOS notifications) to Yamim Tovim as well.

I will take care of it hopefully in a future release, אי”ה.

If you think that my understanding is wrong, please feel free to get back to me by email.
      Col tuv,
      Gabriel.

  3. Calj version 3.7
    iPhone 10.1.1

When restrictions are set to; “specific websites only”, (in the restrictions menu, click “websites) the app opens for a second then closes by itself.

    1. Thank you for reporting. Are you running iOS 10.1.1? And please can you tell me if the Websites Restrictions are turned on, in the system’s settings, or not?
      Thank you for your help.

      1. Yes, the OS is 10.1.1.
I am not sure what restrictions you are referring to, but only the notifications were turned off.

This is occurring on both an iPhone 6s, and an iPad (not a new one).

I also have 2 iPhone 4’s, one of which I just updated and the problem is occurring there too. (7.1.2).

  4. FYI. The problem was apparently time dependent. It was gone the next day when I opened the app on all three of my Apple devices. THANKS!!

  5. Since upgrading to the latest update of the iPhone CalJ app, it crashes as soon as it displays the new tip of the day feature.
There is no way for me to switch off this feature, since the app crashes before I can do anything else.
I am using iOS 7.1.2 running on an iPhone 4.

    1. Irv,
Thank you for reporting. I will try to see what I can do as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, can you try to launch the app in Airplane mode, and tell me if it accepts to open without crashing?

      Thank you,
      Col tuv,
      Gabriel

  6. Since the APP updated today (Dec 12/2016) it does not open at all.
Using Iphone 6+ and IOS 10.1.1
    Please advise.

    1. Thank you for using my app.
You’re right, version 3.8.2 contains a defect. I repaired it in an update 3.8.3 which I submitted to Apple for release: as always it stands in their queue and I hope they will publish it soon to the AppStore.

      Thank you for your patience.
The defect affects only a user who has more than one bookmarked city.

If you can afford to lose your settings (Custom Anniversaries mostly), you may suppress and reinstall the app without waiting for Apple to release my patch.

Thanks again, and sorry about that.

      Gabriel.

  7. This changed to a language that was not English. How do I keep it in English. Also I can not get back to the calendar.

  8. Every time I open the app it sends me to turn on notifications, even tho my notifications for this app are already turned on! I have an iPhone 8 and the problem is super annoying please help.

    1. Hi, thank you for using my app.
What is the version number of your installed CalJ app? (Settings tab, ‘About’ menu).

      Thanks,
      Gabriel

  9. Hi Gabriel,

Using Iphone 6 Plus, ios 12.1.2 ( I know there was an update, but prefer not to if possible), v.4.47 of CalJ

Recently, when I try to open the app it flashes the opening screen, but “closes” immediately. The app doesn’t actually close, but it immediately switches to the home screen. When I double-click the home button to bring up my open apps it appears on the list, but if I select it if flashes for a second and switches back to home screen.

The last time I have confirmation it works is April 3, 2019. I’ve tried to open since then and it may have worked in early April, but without success for the last several weeks at least. I figured updating to the new version would fix, but hasn’t seemed to. I’ve tried switching to airplane mode and turning off wi-fi with the same result.

Any option other than updating ios?

    1. Dear Mark,

First of all, thank you very much for a detailed and complete report of the situation.

I think that upgrading iOS is not mandatory.
Could you please check whether your system is configured to send crash reports automatically? They might help me discover the issue (please refer to Apple’s documentation if you don’t know where/how to activate the debug reports upload).

Besides, if you are interested in participating to the Beta-testing group, please indicate me so, and you will receive an invite to download an alternate version of my app, containing the latest attempts not yet released to the general App Store.

      Thanks again,
      Gabriel

  10. Today being שבעה עשר בתמוז I tried to use CalJ (V 4.20.1, iOS V 14.5.1) to daven minchah. What was missing is the second part of אבינו מלכנו after the section לתענית צבור (starting with א״מ הצמח לנו until the end). Please fix this bug before the next fast day. Otherwise I love this app!!! Thank you.

    1. Thank you very much!
I will see what I can do, בעזרת ה״. But I might not have the time to do it quick!

  11. Al hanisim never plugged in for maariv on Purim night prior to the reading. I had to go to a paper version. Embarrassing and disappointing because I was the hazan tonight. ☹️

    1. Hi Aaron,

Thank you for using my app.
I will see what I can do. It is a fact, the “special days” tefilot are not all in CalJ’s Siddur.
The main purpose of CalJ Siddur is to have it in one’s pocket on a regular day, at the office for a quick Min’cha, or at a late night party for a tefilat ‘Arvit in a corner.

Not really to be used as the Shalia’ch Tzibbur role on Erev Purim, when, supposedly, there are books and paper siddurim to be found around.

But, still, I will see what I can do for a future version.

      Thanks! Chag Purim Samea’ch

      Gabriel

  12. Hi,
Thank you for creating the Apple Watch app. This could be very useful. Unfortunately the app is not working on my Apple Watch. The complication shows — and the app screen is blank
    OS version 9.0.2 ; watch series 4 (model A1978)

  13. Hi,

Thanks for the wonderful App. I have a request if you please: I am at Bat Ayin בת עין in Israel, but cannot get the settlement added to the list of my places for the zmanim. It does not appear in the suggested cities, nor does the nearby Kfar-Etzion (כפר עציון) – I searched for both in both languages and alternative spellings. Furthermore, granting the App permission to use my location and requesting it add my coordinates resulted in it locating me in the Palestinian village of Surif. Needless to say – not the result hoped for.

Could you please add בת עין and כפר עציון to the list of cities/villages/settlements that the app recognizes? I’m sure I am not the only one in the Gush Etzion who would appreciate it.

Thank you kindly, and again – Kudos!
    Sincerely,
    Fruit

    1. Hi,
Thank you very much for your message.
I cannot add any place, because the Map service is not mine. It is supplied by GeoNames coupled with Google Maps.

What platform are you using? If you have the Android’s CalJ, you can always use the Map view to manually locate your place. Then, when the program tries to guess the name, you can ignore the result. The important part is the latitude/longitude coordinates, and the timezone.

      Thanks,
      Gabriel

  14. I think I’ve written abut this to you before, but I’ll try again now.

Jerusalem candle lighting is 40 minutes before sunset, sunset being calculated taking into account the city’s elevation (I think 825m is used).

When sunset of sea level is used (as it seems to be for CalJ), and 40 minutes before is used, you end up with a candle lighting time that is about 5 minutes too early.

    1. Hi Phil,

Thank you for this useful insight.
The parameters in CalJ are all configurable. Everyone is responsible with adjusting their own settings according to their preferred opinion and/or congregation’s specifics.
The defaults only act as initial guideline. So, in your case, you should either set the elevation to 0 for your saved city, or modify its Candle Minutes param.

      Thank you!
      Col touv,
      Gabriel

  15. The arvit nusach ashkenaz seems to be wrong. I especially noticed shalom rav to be not what I had just done in mincha.

  16. Hi,

Thank You for an amazing app.

The timing reported is off, the shkiya today is 6:26 in Monsey but the 72 night is reported to be 7:47 which is wrong, it should be around 7:35

    1. Hi, thank you for using my app.
Some people reported that the defect was resolved when they modified some settings in the Display Settings section, on the Settings tab in the app.
      Thank you
