Rabbis from the XVII<sup>th<\/sup> and XVIII<sup>th<\/sup> centuries, who stated important decisions regarding the way to compute the daylight duration (among others).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their approaches have direct consequences in the Zmanim of the prayers and other daily observance in Judaism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GR&#8221;A<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vilna_Gaon\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vilna_Gaon\">Vilna Gaon<\/a>, <em>Rabbi Eliyahu ben Shlomo Zalman<\/em> (1720 \u2013 1797).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.calj.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"229\" height=\"261\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.calj.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-1.png\" alt=\"Vilna Gaon\" class=\"wp-image-467\" style=\"width:173px;height:auto\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Sunrise and Sunset are two observable astronomic events, when the first and last ray of Sun are visible above the horizon line, from a given standpoint. According to GR&#8221;A, the Daylight is the duration that spans between the Sunrise and Sunset of a given date at a given location.<br><br>The Proportional Hour (in Hebrew: Sha&#8217;a zmanit \u05e9\u05e2\u05d4 \u05d6\u05de\u05e0\u05d9\u05ea, also called Seasonal Hour) measures one twelfth of the daylight duration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">M&#8221;A<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.calj.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" height=\"242\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.calj.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-2.png\" alt=\"Rabbi Abraham Abele Gombiner\" class=\"wp-image-468\" style=\"width:169px;height:auto\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avraham_Gombiner\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avraham_Gombiner\">Magen Avraham<\/a>, is the title of a famous book by <em>Rabbi Abraham Abele Gombiner<\/em> (c. 1635 \u2013 1682). We often refer to Rabbis by the main piece of work of theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the M&#8221;A, the Proportional hour is defined by one twelfth of the time spanning from dawn to nightfall. In other words, it is the time between sunset and sunrise, plus the morning and evening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/fsd\/twilight\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/fsd\/twilight\">twilight<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This duration is longer than the one calculated by GR&#8221;A.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.calj.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"729\" height=\"508\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.calj.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image.png\" alt=\"Definitions of Twilight\" class=\"wp-image-466\" style=\"width:396px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.calj.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image.png 729w, https:\/\/blog.calj.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-300x209.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>There are also a number of rabbinical opinions regarding the accurate definition of dawn and nightfall.
